The New “African Scene” – Part 1: Hip African Electro that Pops and makes you Hop
I’ve always considered South Africa to be something else in the African landscape. Nothing I can actually relate to, if it isn’t for the usual respect and admiration for Nelson Mandela, and a strong liking for Miriam Makeba’s “Pata Pata"…
But lately, this electro-pop and pretty hip duo has been setting my ears and heart on fire: Playdoe is the name. The members, Sibot (Dj Fuck) and Spoek Mathambo (lyrics and voice) have no “heavy message” to deliver and instead, send out positive vibes. They are young, funky, talented and everything about them screams “avant-garde”. The self-described “Neolectro Afrobotic Ethnotechno Mamas Boys” serve us an expert mix of ‘80’s electro music and ‘90’s rap flow. Some kind of refreshing cocktail that puts the new African electro wave on the musical map, with a certain justice.

Their first EP “Sibot and Spoek are Playdoe” features my personal favourites “It’s that beat” and “Pop like this”, yet another colourful production. Check out their myspace or live tour details.
