The New “African Scene” – Part 2: Just a Band - An Experimental Boy Band
The first time you heard "Scratch to Reveal", it felt like an exploration into the world of music, an ecletic mix. An album which fulfills a craving of extensive music beats. This UMO (Unidentified Music Object) comes straight from Kenya and mixes genres from Lounge to Hip-Hop to Soul to Electro. The second, third etc... are just a confirmation.
Just a Band, a Kora All African Music Award Nominee (Best African Music Video), is something more than a just a band: they produce their sound, their videos, their CD covers and everything else. Their fame is 100% homegrown, fertilized by Facebook, a blog, online music stores such as iTunes and Amazon. Which makes them groundbreaking in the region and gives their music a yummy underground flavour.
I don't understand half of what they jam about, but music is an universal language they master. The Experiment is a success as will reveal, I am sure, 82, their upcomming album. Blinky, Dan and Jim told the world last year that they would only come up with three albums, thus leaving the music scene while they are still "ahead of their time". But relax, they do have greater plans for the future.
You can be their facebook groupie or check out their blog.
