The New “African Scene” – Part 3: Kuduro

For a few years now, Angola has exported more than just tons of oil. Kuduro is the name of the new 100% Luanda-made combo of music and dance.

Lets rewind a little and get to the roots of it all. Angola is in southern Africa, bordering Namibia and the D.R. Congo. Colonized by Portugal for more than 300 years, Luanda and Lisbon are sisters cities, so most Kuduro hits are Lusophone, resulting in the Portuguese dancing to this new music for almost as long as the Luanda clubbers.

Kuduro is one of the recent tornadoes that hit the house/electronic world, even though it doesn't fully identify with either genre. It has glorious ancestors: swing and batucada (brazilian inspired percussions), with a hint of soca and techno.

For some, Kuduro is home cooked (using just a PC and software as "basic" as Fruityloops) and sold right on the streets, while others, like top chef Buraka Som Sistema, prepare us gourmet mixes using failure-proof "ingredients" like international pop star M.I.A..

In short, Kuduro is all about the spirit of crazy Luandan nights. And I'm sure we all wish we were there...
