Submissions
Abesha.com publishes articles and essays across a broad range of subjects. Our writings tend to focus on celebrating our cultural diversity as well as our role in being the custodians and ambassadors for our respective home countries/regions, and/or adopted lands. We value the individual’s perspective on the particular. Abesha.com’s contributors hail from a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds. While everyone is welcome to submit an article, we ask all contributors to note the following:
Language
All submitted articles must be written in Standard English, with careful attention paid to the details of punctuation and grammar. First-time writers are welcome, but we encourage you to look at other examples of writing before submitting articles. Abesha.com reserves the right to edit submitted articles before publishing.
Features
Our features are usually long, carefully considered pieces of writing that explore, highlight or otherwise bring attention to a specific subject, such as a personality, a specific event, or a cultural movement. Features can be interviews, and should aim to clearly contextualize the subject they are presenting. On average, features run between 800 to 2000 words in length.
Columns
Have a gripe about a particular kind of food? What’s the healthcare policy like in your state? Why are your city metro police armed with rifles? Columns explore topics, none too large or too small, from the writer’s personal reflections and thoughts. We encourage individual, one-time submissions, as well as regular contributions. On average, columns run between 600 to 1000 words in length.
Reviews
Films, plays, music, books, dance, paintings, photography! Our world is abuzz with the brilliant contributions of artists, writers, and thinkers. Abesha.com’s reviews assess these works, categorizing and describing each piece with thoughtful care and precision. Reviews tend to be quite short in length (appr. 300 to 500 words) but can also be much longer. If you’re a writer and would like suggestions for items to review, we have a list! News
Our news articles are reserved for press releases and announcements, as well as coverage of specific events. In the case of the latter, please make sure all locations and times are clearly written. News articles will be posted in the Community section. On average, they should run between 300 to 600 words in length.
Music and Video Submissions
If you’re a musician or filmmaker, and would like your work showcased on Abesha.com’s music or film player, please use the submission form below. Our panel reviews each submission against a set of standards (eg. quality of recording, production, conception, etc). Your work does not have to be part of a larger, professional product but it does need to adhere to the professional norms of the genre it belongs, unless of course, you’re creating a new genre.
